Care of the Caregivers (Workshops funded by Comic Relief)

Two 'care of the caregiver' workshops took place in May 2003 for the caregivers of projects on the East Rand:

At the request of the caregivers who attended the 'care of the caregiver' workshops, an HIV/AIDS Eucharist is conducted on the third Wednesday of each month at St Boniface Anglican Church in Germiston. It is well supported by the caregivers some of whom bring their clients/patients who are well enough to the service.

70 caregivers attended a one-day workshop on 24 March 2004 at St Boniface Anglican church in Germiston. The focus of the workshop was caring for the carer, burnout and antiretroviral treatment.

72 caregivers attended a two-day workshop on 'Care of the Caregiver' on 12 and 13 August 2004. The workshop focussed on:

    • Living positively with HIV/AIDS
    • Counselling skills
    • Infection control
    • Death and grieving process
    • The TASO community-based approach to HIV/AIDS
    • Stress and burnout

130 caregivers attended a three-day care of caregiver workshop in Nhlazatshe on 29 - 31 October 2004:

The projects are in various communities below the N17 which is the main highway from Ermelo to Mbabane, Swaziland.

130 caregivers attended a three-day Care of the Caregiver workshop in Mayflower on 3 - 5 December 2004:

The projects are in various communities above the N17 in Mpumalanga close to the Swaziland border.

65 caregivers from home-based care projects based in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, attended a three-day ‘Care of the Caregiver’ workshop held in the St Boniface Anglican Church hall in Germiston from 7 – 9 December 2005.

Dr Sophie Msiza included the following topics in the workshop:

Overview of planning of the caregivers’ daily work; dealing with expectations of caregivers, clients and families; caregiver workload and rotation of caregivers; role of caregiver and supervisor; organisational issues; conflict management; stress management; issues around death and dying.

49 caregivers from 9 urban home-based care projects attended a Care of the Caregiver residential retreat conducted by Professor Bill Doubleday at De Mazenod Centre in Germiston on 9 – 12 July, 2006. Sessions included the following:
  • Our calling as caregivers
  • Relationships
  • How to communicate more effectively
  • Working as a team
  • Emotions associated with the dying process
  • Forgiveness
  • Grief: the human response to loss
  • Caring for ourselves as caregivers. Looking at the whole person.
  • Causes of stress in care-giving work. Coping strategies.


56 caregivers from 9 urban home-based care projects and an HIV/AIDS support group attended a Care of the Caregiver residential retreat conducted by Professor Bill Doubleday at De Mazenod Centre in Germiston on 12 – 14 July, 2006. The sessions included the same topics as above.
