Vacancy: Dean of
Grahamstown.
Applications are invited irrespective
of gender, "race", marital status
or churchmanship, for the post of Dean and Archdeacon
of Grahamstown. The successful applicant will
need to be both a dedicated parish priest and
an informed participant in various diocesan
boards and committees. Gifts of leadership,
administration (including delegation), and time
management are essential. The Dean should be
able to enjoy worshipping with a diverse congregation,
within a wide range of cultural traditions,
and must ensure that none feel marginalised.
Although the main language of worship is English,
communicative competence in the three local
official languages is desirable, but not essential.
Preaching demands a simplicity of language for
the benefit of second language speakers, but
also challenging ideas for the educationally
privileged membership.
For a Profile of the Cathedral
Parish, visit the Cathedral web site at http://www.scifac.ru.ac.za/cathedral://www.scifac.ru.ac.za/cathedral
or write to the Diocesan Bishop, Bishop T C
Makgoba, P O Box 181, Grahamstown 6140, or bpgtn@intekom.co.za.
Further particulars about the post of Dean
and Archdeacon may also be obtained from the
Bishop. The post will become vacant from the
beginning of October 2006, but arrangements
can be made to cover a short interregnum before
the arrival of the right candidate, if necessary.

Statement from the Synod
of the Diocese of Cape Town
(Anglican Church of Southern Africa)
The Anglican Church
in Cape Town launched a programme of action
to combat abuse of women at its Synod on Saturday.
Unacceptable levels of violence
against women and children topped the agenda
of the three day meeting of bishops, clergy
and parish leaders, held in Retreat. ‘We
have talked about this for over 10 years –
now we must act’ said Revd Michelle Walker,
introducing the debate. ‘We have
allowed the gospel of Jesus Christ, which should
be good news of liberation for everyone, to
be interpreted in ways that diminish women.
We must change our attitudes and our teaching.’
A wide range of speakers passionately
endorsed proposals for the Church to engage
courageously with religious and cultural beliefs
and practices, and to review its teaching materials,
especially for Sunday schools and confirmation
classes. ‘We must teach as if every
child is our daughter, our future son-in-law.’
‘We must recognize that
if it wasn’t for men, we would not be
having this debate’ said one clergyman.
‘I am standing here to repent of the failures
of male leadership within our Church’
said another, who went on to speak movingly
of pastoral care of raped children. A
hospital chaplain said that every month some
200-250 girls aged between 6 and 12 were admitted
to the city’s hospitals because of rape,
and these were just the tip of the iceberg.
The Synod unanimously approved
the proposal to develop a programme of action
and monitoring, and to work harder at changing
attitudes. They issued a call for the
Church to stop being part of the problem, and
to take a lead in providing solutions.
‘We have to move from
seeing this primarily as helping individuals
and instead hear women’s stories as a
collective cry for the healing of society.’

PM
ON 21 SEPTEMBER, CHURCHES AROUND THE
WORLD WILL PRAY AND ACT FOR PEACE
"Praying for peace is an essential
part of Christian worship and, indeed, of human
existence," says World Council of Churches
(WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia
about the International Day of Prayer for Peace,
to be celebrated on 21 September 2006.
On that date or the closest Sunday to it, WCC
member churches worldwide are invited to pray
for peace. This WCC initiative saw the light
two years ago within the framework of its Decade
to Overcome Violence (DOV), and was welcomed
by UN secretary-general Kofi Annan. Its celebration
coincides with the UN International Day of Peace.
The theme for this year, "…
and still we seek peace", was
chosen by churches from Latin America - the
region of the DOV annual focus in 2006.
Churches are being asked "to be especially
mindful of the violence in Latin America, but
also of the suffering children, elderly, women
and men in the Middle East", and to pray
for "cessation of all violence and for
lasting peace," says Kobia.
The International Day of Prayer for Peace is
an opportunity for church communities in all
places to pray and act together to nurture lasting
peace in the hearts of people, their families,
communities and societies.
Suggestions on how to observe the day include
art contests, educational and cultural events,
prayers and reflections on peace in the community,
workplace, school or home, and prayer vigils
with other faith communities.
Copies of an IDDP brochure, prayers
and other resources are available on the DOV
website:
